    OPPONENTS OF UNITED STATES POLICY IN VIETNAM HELD PROTECT MARCHES AND RALLIES IN CITIES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD TODAY (SATURDAY) INCLUDING LONDON, PARIS, WEST BERLIN AND AMSTERDAM, BUT THEY WERE ORDERLY COMPARED WITH THE VIOLENT CLASHES BETWEEN DEMONSTRATORS AND TROOPS OUTSIDE THE PENTAGON IN WASHINGTON.

    THE MAIN PROTEST RALLY IN LONDON WAS SCHEDULED FOR TRAPAFCAR SQUARE BUT RAIN AFFECTED ATTENDANCES. TONIGHT, ABOUT 300 PEOPLE MARCHED IN A TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION ON 10 DOWNING STREET, HOME OF THE PRIME MINISTER. THEY HANDED IN A LETTER URGING BRITAIN TO END ITS SUPPORT OF AMERICA'S VIETNAM POLICY. EARLIER, ABOUT 500 PEOPLE CROWDED INTO A NORTH LONDON TOWNHALL TO HEAR MESSAGES FROM OTHER ANTI-VIETNAM WAR DEMONSTRATORS IN EUROPEAN CAPITALS, OVER A SPECIAL TELEPHONE LINK-UP.

    IN PARIS, MORE THAN 30,000 CHANTING, BANNER WAVING DEMONSTRATORS POURED INTO THE CENTRAL PART OF THE CITY FOR A MASSIVE RALLY IN SUPPORT OF PEACE IN VIETNAM. AMERICANS AND VIETNAMESE WALKED SIDE BY SIDE AMONG THE MARCHERS IN HEAVY RAIN AT THE HEAD OF THE PROCESSION. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ARRANGED BY SOME 30 ORGANISATIONS INCLUDED THE FRENCH COMMUNIST PARTY.

    MORE THAN 10,000 PEOPLE, MARCHING BEHIND A HUGE VIETCONG FLAG, BROUGHT TRAFFIC TO A COMPLETE STANDSTILL IN WEST BERLIN. THE DAY'S DEMONSTRATION WAS PEACEFUL BUT TONIGHT, POLICE USE WATER CANNON TO HOSE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ON THE CITY'S MAIN STREET AS THEY STAGED ANOTHER PROTEST MARCH. USING RUBBER TRUNCHEONS, THE POLICE BROKE UP THE DEMONSTRATORS AND MADE DOZENS OF ARRESTS.

    POLICE WERE OUT IN FORCE IN AMSTERDAM AS ABOUT 15,000 PEOPLE MARCHED THROUGH THE MAIN STREETS AND ASSEMBLED OUTSIDE THE TOWN HALL OF THE DUTCH CAPITAL. THE DEMONSTRATORS BROUGHT ALL TRAFFIC TO A HALT. POLICE MOVED IN TO BREAK THEM UP AFTER THEY DISREGARDED ORDERS NOT TO SING OR YELL SLOGANS.
