  • Description

The world has gained another independent state....temporarily at least. It's the free and independent Republic of Frestonia which has been declared by squatters and residents of a small area in West London. They're upset that the local council is going to pull down houses and replace them with factories.

SYNOPSIS: Frestonia is an eight acre, derelict area. Its 120 residents mostly squatters, decided after a referendum that the British government and local council are unfit to rule it. So they have set up a new government and every resident is a minister -- although some are without portfolios. Passports, postage stamps and currency are to be printed, but the Prestonians hope to co-operate with neighbouring Britain for essential services.

Their motto is "All One Family" and they've taken the name Bramley, which is one of the streets in Frestonia. Their flag has white petals, for peace and people, a yellow sun for a new era, on a green background for growth and freshness.

But, just how serious is Frestonia. Foreign Affairs Minister, David Rappaport-Bramley.

Their Members of Parliament are certainly different.....like the Transport Minister....
.....and the Education Minister. He's the four-year-old in the baby buggy on the right, being taken on the rounds of his electorate by his mother.

But the permanent residents are hoping something will be achieved by Frestonia. Peggy Treegoiing-Bramley has lived there for 40 years and runs the local bottle shop.
