  • Description

U Thant told a Press conference in New York yesterday (Monday) that he had "no intention whatsoever" of serving beyond his present term as United Nations Secretary-General, which expires at the end of this year. He felt his successor should be a man who looks to the future.

U Thant, who will be 62 on Friday, said that in 1966, when he decided to accept a second term of office, he had already decided that it would be his last.

On the question of his successor, he said that it should be a man who looks to the future and has a global conception of problems. Regional considerations should not be a factor in the choice.
