DIAZ: "Although the Ayatollah Khomeini had refused to see him, although his own life had been threatened and despite the fact he could not say the hostages were any closer to being released Waldheim insisted his trip had not been a failure. Waldheim would not elaborate on the alternatives discussed and he refused to say whether he would recommend the Security Council to go ahead with planed discussions of economic sanctions against Iran. He said he would report to the council over the weekend in expectation that the council will meet to discuss Iran on Monday (7 January) as scheduled. David Diaz, News Centre 4 at Kennedy Airport".

REPORTER: "Secretary General have you in fact returned empty-handed?"

WALDHEIM: "I told you at the beginning of the trip that it would he naive to expect that this trip of the secretary general will immediately solve this very complex problem. I want you to believe this, on the other hand I was hoping that we will create a better understanding between the authorities in Iran, the different powers on the one hand and the United Nations on the one hand and the United Nations on the other. Because there are, there is a lot of misunderstandings about the United Nations.

I was amazed by the rather critical attitude that is and understatement towards the United Nations, so it gave me an excellent opportunity to clarify this and also to show them that we try and do our best to contribute to a solution of the problem."

WALDHEIM: "My impression is that the situation is certainly much more grave and serious then perhaps many people believe. I expect further problems and I do not expect a quick solution, but I think we have to continue all our efforts and I hope that the ideas which are discussed with the Revolutionary Council will help make progress in this regard."

REPORTER: "What further problems do you expect?"

WALDHEIM: "Well we talked before about the power situation and I think this is a very pertinent question. You have several power centres in the country and you ask about my impressions before and after my visit. Well I found out this is a very serious problem you have the Revolutionary Council which acts as a sort of government but isn't a government really, and you have the students who have their own administration, they are well organised. They decide I think independently and finally you have Ayatollah Khomeini in Qom who is the spiritual leader but is certainly a great influence on the people."
