  • Description

THE CHIEFS OF INDONESIA'S ARMED FORCES CLAIMED TODAY (THURSDAY) THAT MR. D.N. AIDIT, LEADER OF THE COUNTRY'S 3-MILLION STRONG COMMUNIST PARTY, WAS LEADING RESISTANCE AGAINST THE ARMY IN CENTRAL JAVA. THE STATEMENT SAID THAT MR AIDIT HAD FLOWN TO JOGJARTA, IN CENTRAL JAVA, ONE DAY AFTER THE ATTEMPTED COUP.

SINCE THE COUP MOSLEMS HAVE MOUNTED A STRONG CAMPAIGN TO GET PRESIDENT SUKARNO TO BEN THE COMMUNIST PARTY. THEIR CAMPAIGN, WHICH APPEARS TO HAVE HAD THE TACIT SUPPORT OF THE ARMY, HAS BEEN MARKED BY OUTBREAKS OF VIOLENCE. SINCE LAST FRIDAY, WHEN THE PARTY'S HEADQUARTERS WAS PARTLY DAMAGED BY FIRE, MOSLEMS HAVE ATTACKED THE PREMISES OF THE COMMUNIST YOUTH, WOMEN'S, TRADE AND CULTURAL ORGANISATIONS. THE HOUSE OF MR AIDIT, HAS ALSO BEEN SACKED.

ON TUESDAY, A MOB OF ABOUT 200 YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN WENT FIRST TO THE LUCKMAN HOUSE, WHICH IS IN A COMFORTABLE SUBURBAN AREA OF DJAKARTA. THEY DRAGGED OUT FURNITURE, PERSONAL POSSESSIONS, PARTY LITERATURE AND BURNED THEM ON THE GROUND. THE ACT WAS REPEATED LATER AT NJOTO HOUSE. NO ONE WAS IN EITHER HOUSE WHEN THE ATTACKS WERE MADE. ALTHOUGH BOTH MR LUCKMAN AND MR NJOTO ATTENDED AN INDONESIAN CABINET MEETING LAST WEEK, THEIR WHEREABOUTS HAVE NOT BEEN KNOWN FOR SEVERAL DAYS.
