    Precious McKenzie won England's first Gold Medal in the Commonwealth Games and sent records tumbling on Friday (17 July) in the bantamweight weight-lifting event. At Leith Town Hall in Edinburgh, he lifted 242-1/2 pounds (110 kg) in the Press, then 209-1/2 pounds (95 kg) in the Snatch and finally hosted two-and-a-half times his own weight in the Jerk with 286-1/2 pounds (130 kg).

    McKenzie's aggregate was 738 pounds (335 kg), a Games record
    Second place was taken by A Phillips of Barbados, with an overall aggregate of 699-3/4 pounds (317.5 kg). He was second in both the Press and the Snatch lifts, as well as in the Jerk lift.

    Singapore's C.H. Tung took third place with an overall aggregate lift of 666-1/2 pounds (302.5 kg). Tung came fourth in the Press and the Snatch lifts. He also came third in the Jerk lift.

    McKenzie, who was born in Durban, South Africa, also broke a Games record in his performance in the press lift.

    Other contestants were from Canada, India and wales.
