  • Description

The two Apollo 14 astronauts scheduled to make man's third moon landing early next year have been rehearsing their moon walk in the Arizona desert.

Navy Captain Alan Shepard and Commander Ed Mitchell have been testing their equipment on the site where 200 man-made craters provide the sort of surface they will find when they land in the Fra Mauro area of the moon.

Among the equipment is a lunar transporter, which the astronauts will use while carrying out surface experiments -- a vehicle similar in appearance to a motorised rickshaw.

Geologists at the Arizona training ground are teaching the two astronauts how to describe and tabulate their geological finds on the moon.

Throughout the training, shepard and Mitchell are in constant communication with the third crew member, Air Force Major Stuart Roosa. He will pilot the command module and will remain in lunar orbit during the moon walk.
