  • Description

COFFEE SEEDLINGS FROM KENYA'S LARGEST COMMERCIAL COFFEE NURSERY WERE SOLD AND THE REMAINDER BURNED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). THE DISPOSAL FOLLOWED A REDUCTION BY THE INTERNATIONAL COFFEE ORGANISATION OF KENYA'S ANNUAL QUOTA BY 3,000 TONS TO 44,000 TONS OF PRODUCED COFFEE.

THE INTERNATIONAL COFFEE ORGANISATION, WHICH DECIDES QUOTAS FOR MEMBER COUNTRIES, ORDERED KENYA'S REDUCTION BECAUSE THE MILD WINTER IN EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA HAD RESULTED IN A DROP IN COFFEE CONSUMPTION.

KENYA USUALLY PRODUCES AROUND 65,000 TONS OF COFFEE A YEAR AND GROWERS ARE HOPING TO SELL ABOUT 10,000 TONS OF THE SURPLUS LOCALLY AND SOME TO NON-QUOTA COUNTRIES... TEA-DRINKING COUNTRIES LIKE JAPAN AND INDIA.

BACKING UP THE I.C.O.'S EDICT WAS AN ORDER FROM THE KENYAN MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, MR BRUCE MACKENZIE, WHO'S NOW ATTENDING THE I.C.O. MEETING IN LONDON.

MR MACKENZIE HAS TOLD COFFEE GROWERS TO LIMIT EXCESS PLANTING TO TWO PER CENT OF THE MATURE CROPS: THAT IS TEN TREES TO THE ACRE.

THUS, THE GREENGATE FARM NURSERY YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) HAD TO GET RID OF 400,000 SEEDLINGS. ABOUT 6???,000 WERE PERMITTEDLY SOLD TO A CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY BUT THE REMAINDER HAD TO BE DESTROYED.
