Background: Several hundred farmers in the Lake St.John region, 100 miles north of Quebec city, carried out their threat today to block provincial highways with slow moving tractors. The demonstration was organized to draw attention to the farmers' claims for five million dollars in government compensation for 1964 crop losses.

The Catholic Farmers' Union which organized the demonstration claimed that more than a thousand tractors were on the roads.Crawling along at a steady five miles an hour, the tractors moved on various roads in the area. Most seriously affected was the 100-mile-long highway passing through the Laurentides Provincial Park which links Quebec city with the Lake St.John district. It took some motorists as long as eight hours to complete a trip which normally takes only two.Sixty provincial police constables in the area were joined by another 100 despatched from Quebec city.

They intervened at least twice, once when a group of farmers staged a sit-down strike in the middle of the road and once when tractors were blocking both lanes of the highway. The demonstration was called off late tonight, but the farmers said they would resume it in the morning if the government does not improve on its offer of one-million dollars in compensation.
