  • Description

On Monday (27 May) the new President of France, Valery Giscard D'Estaing, attended the traditional first engagement of a French President after his swearing in -- a meeting with the people of Paris in the form of their elected representatives, the Council of Paris.

The reception in the Paris City Hall was also attended by M. Giscard D'Estaing's wife, mother, father and sisters. He was cheered by large crowds outside the City Hall.

Earlier, after M. Giscard D'Estaing was sworn in as the twentieth President of France, Interior Minister Jacques Chirac -- an ambitious 41-year old Gaullist administrator -- was named as his Prime Minister.

Soon after M. Chirac, the second youngest French Prime Minister this century, talked to reporters outside the Elysee Palace and said he would submit his Government list on Tuesday (28 May).

"The Cabinet will be somewhat limited in size", he said.

As M. Giscard D'Estaing's senior executive, M. Chirac will have the task of leading the Presidential majority in Parliament and administering the era of social and political change promised by the new President.

    M. Chirac became Interior Minister in the Government of the outgoing Premier Pierre Messmer last March. Before that he had served for almost two years as Agriculture Minister. He was a close confidant of President Pompidou and manoeuvred to assist M. Giscard D'Estaing in his election campaign.

The seven-year term of President Giscard D'Estaing began with a 21-gun salute over the River Seine as the new President walked up the Champs Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe.
