Background: Malawi has undertaken youth training in a big way through its Young Pioneers movement. At their training camps young people are taught agricultural improvement, camp craft, hygiene and undergo rigorous physical fitness programmes. The Young Pioneers movement chairman Mr. Aleke Banda showed a group of government officials over two mains camps, on January 7 to show them the young people in action.

The Young Pioneers movement stems from the Nyasaland African Congress Youth League -- a political organisation -- formed in 1958. Banned in 1959, it was re-formed as the Young Pioneers in 1963. Dr. Hastings Banda opened six training bases at Nasawa, Cholo, Chitipa, Makanga, and Fort Johnson and plans to open more in the central and northern regions of Malawi.

Their prime function is to teach young people how to get more crops from the soil. Most of the country's farms yield only 2 1/2 bags of maize to the acre against a potential of 20 bags. The Young Pioneers are taught how to grow maize tobacco, groundnuts, tea, coffee, citrus fruits and vegetables. They also learn about animal husbandry, raising cattle, goats, pigs, sheep and chickens.

In addition, they take part in gymnastics hikes competitive games and learn camp craft skills as well as basic military training.
