  • Description

GENERAL JAAFAR MOHAMMED EL-NIMEIRY, SUDAN'S PRIME MINISTER AND HEAD OF STATE, IS HOLDING TALKS IN CAIRO WITH PRESIDENT NASSER OF EGYPT; IT IS SAID THAT THEY ARE REVIEWING RECENT MIDDLE EAST DEVELOPMENTS AND BILATERAL RELATIONS, AND THAT GENERAL NIMEIRY WILL BE REPORTING ON HIS TALKS WITH SOVIET LEADERS IN MOSCOW.

ON HIS ARRIVAL IN CAIRO TWO DAYS AGO (WEDNESDAY), GENERAL NIMEIRY WAS GREETED AT THE AIRPORT BY PRESIDENT NASSER, EGYPTIAN MINISTERS AND SENIOR ARMY OFFICERS, AND BY THE LIBYAN DEFENCE AND FOREIGN MINISTERS.

THOUSANDS OF EGYPTIANS AND SUDANESE CHEERED AS THE TWO PRESIDENTS INSPECTED A GUARD OF HONOUR BEFORE DRIVING IN STATE TO THE KUBBEH REPUBLICAN PALACE WHERE NIMEIRY WILL STAY DURING HIS THREE-DAY VISIT. HIS ENGAGEMENTS INCLUDE A TOUR OF AN IRON AND STEEL PLANT AND OF A MILITARY FACTORY, AND A VISIT TO THE EGYPTIAN FRONT LINE.

INFORMED SOURCES SAID THAT PRESIDENT NASSER WOULD INFORM HIS VISITOR OF THE NEW HARD-LINE POLICY OF ARAB CONFRONTATION WITH ISRAEL. SUDAN HAS A TOKEN FORCE STATIONED IN THE SUEZ CANAL. THE TWO HEADS OF STATE ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO DISCUSS CLOSER COORDINATION BETWEEN THE REVOLUTIONARY REGIMES IN THE ARAB WORLD.

GENERAL NIMEIRY FLEW INTO CAIRO ON HIS WAY HOME FROM MOSCOW, WHERE HE ATTENDED THE CELEBRATIONS MARKING THE 52ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOLSHEVIK REVOLUTION, AND MET SOVIET PREMIER ALEXEI KOSYGIN AND PARTY CHIEF LEONID BREZHNEV. THE AUTHORITATIVE CAIRO NEWSPAPER AL AHRAM REPORTED YESTERDAY THAT A TOP-LEVEL EGYPTIAN DELEGATION WOULD OPEN IMPORTANT TALKS WITH SOVIET LEADERS IN MOSCOW NEXT WEEK.

(ON THE 20 DECEMBER, A THREE-DAY ARAB SUMMIT MEETING WILL OPEN IN MOROCCO TO DISCUSS THE MIDDLE EAST SITUATION.)
