  • Description

South African Premier Dr. Verwoerd and members of the Government attended, Oct 15, a thanksgiving service for the result of the recent Republic referendum. The service which took place at the Voortrekker monument in the hills outside Pretoria, was attended by a crowd of about 15,000. It was organised by the Afrikaans Cultural Society.

Dr. Verwoerd arrived at the monument with an escort of an armoured car. A group of Voortrekker children - Afrikaans boy scouts and girl guides - formed a guard of honour for the Prime Minister. After the service Dr. Verwoerd in a short speech told the crowd that the Europeans of South Africa must work together in the new Republic. He called on the Afrikaans people to share the Republic with English speaking South Africans.

Before the speeches began the crowd watched a light aircraft sky writing the words "Ons Vir Jou" - we are for you - above the ceremony. Several people attended in the Dutch style Voortrekker dress.
