  • Description

MR WILSON CONTINUED HIS FIVE-DAY OFFICIAL VISIT YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) WITH FURTHER TALKS WITH GENERAL GOWON AND A VISIT TO ENUGU, WHICH WAS FORMERLY HELD BY THE BIAFRANS. HE LATER DROVE SOUTH TO UDI, LESS THAN 20 MILES (32 KMS) FROM THE WAR-FRONT, BEFORE FLYING BACK TO LAGOS.

MR WILSON BEGAN HIS DAY WITH THREE HOURS OF TALKS WITH GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON. ON THE AGENDA PUBLISHED BEFORE THE MEETING WAS THE QUESTION OF AID TO WAR VICTIMS, BUT THE TALKS ARE THOUGHT TO HAVE COVERED THE MORE DIFFICULT PROBLEMS OF BRITISH ARMS AND NIGERIAN BOMBING OF BIAFRA.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE TALKS MR WILSON AND HIS PARTY BOARDED A FOKKER FRIENDSHIP AIRCRAFT AND FLEW TO ENUGU, WHERE THE PRIME MINISTER MET WILLIAM AND IBO LEADERS. HE THEN WENT ON A TOUR OF THE AREA ROUND UDI, IN AN ATTEMPT TO ASSESS FOR HIMSELF THE KIND OF HELP THAT IS NEEDED FOR REFUGEES. HE VISITED A RED CROSS CAMP, AND SPOKE TO OFFICIALS AND REFUGEES. HE WAS GREETED BY IBO LEADERS NEAR THE WAR-FRONT, AND IBO CHILDREN DANCED FOR HIM.

WHILE MR WILSON WAS VISITING THE AREA ROUND ENUGU, IT WAS ANNOUNCED IN BIAFRA THAT THE BIAFRANS WERE LOOKING FORWARD WITH INTEREST TO A VISIT BY MR WILSON TO BIAFRA. BUT BRITISH OFFICIALS STATED THAT THERE WAS AS YET NO PLAN FOR MR WILSON TO MEET BIAFRAN LEADERS.
