Background: IN THAILAND SEVEN BORDER POLICE WERE KILLED AND THREE OTHERS SERIOUSLY INJURED (LAST WEDNESDAY 12 NOV) WHEN THEIR LANDROVER VEHICLE STRUCK MINES PLANTED BY THAI GUERILLAS ON A ROAD NINE MILES FROM THE MALAYSIAN BORDER. THE MEN WERE DRIVING TO THE TOWN OF HAADYAI TO BUY FOOD SUPPLIES FOR THEIR OUTPOST.

OFFICIAL REPORTS SAY THE LANDROVER STRUCK TWO MINES; ABOUT 20 MEN WHO WERE HIDING IN JUNGLE ALONGSIDE THE NARROW GRAVEL ROAD OPENED FIRE WITH RIFLES AND AUTOMATIC WEAPONS. FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES THEY BLASTED THE POLICEMEN, THEN RAN FROM THE JUNGLE, KICKED THE BODIES TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE DEAD, AND LEFT, TAKING THE POLICE WEAPONS AND FIELD RADIO FROM THE VEHICLE.

THE AMBUSH TOOK PLACE AT 6 A.M. LESS THAN TWO MILES FROM AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT NOW BEING BUILT NEAR SONGKHLA. THAI POLICE BELIEVE A BAND OF 50 TO 60 GUERILLAS HAVE THEIR HEADQUARTERS IN THE AREA.
