The United Nations Security Council on Friday (21 October) renewed the mandate of the U.N. Emergency Force in Sinai for another year, until 24 October, 1978. The force contains 4,297 officers and men from seven countries. It was established in the wake of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war to serve as a buffer between the armies of Egypt and Israel.
SYNOPSIS: The vote being taken. Israel later welcomed the decision, as it wanted the force to remain until Israel and Egypt conclude a follow-up agreement to the one they struck in 1975.
