  • Description

After five years of action in South-east Asia, the United States Air Force 355th Tactical Fighter Wing is returning home as part of the reduction of American forces in thailand. Based at Tahkli, the unit's 50 Thunderchief fighter-bombers flew on many missions against military targets in North Vietnam.

The last of the F-105 thunderchiefs flew out of their Thai base at the beginning of November. Since 1965, the four squadrons making up the wing amassed a combat record of 101,304 sorties. Pilots were credited with shooting down 17 MIG Fighter-bombers.

The withdrawal of the wing is part of the current two-phase plan to reduce the U.S. strength in Thailand from 48,000 to about 32,000 men. Flying back by way of Hawaii, the Thunderchiefs will eventually form part of the Air National Guard units in Kansas and Virginia.
