  • Description

At the U.S.Space Light Centre at Huntsville, Alabama, preparations are well underway for a full test in the near future of the world's largest known rocket booster.

For the first time, the Saturn Five moon rocket will be fired at full thrust for the two and one-half minutes that it will be needed in actual flight.

Although the test booster in this film -- shown in a preliminary firing -- will never fly, it is identical to the first stage of the three-stage Saturn Five/Apollo vehicle which carry American Astronauts to the moon around the end of the decade.

As in this film, the test booster will be secured for its full-power firing in a 400-foot-high test stand. Its five powerful engines will produce seven and one-half million pounds of thrust, burning some four and one-half million pounds of kerosene fuel and liquid oxygen.Four of the engines will be pivoted in the test in the same manner they will steer the Apollo spacecraft when it blasts off for the moon.More than 1,200 engineering measurements will be recorded.

The booster stands 133 feet tall, is 33 feet in diameter and weighs 280,000 pounds. Each of its engines weighs 10 tons.
