Background: THIRTY-ONE YEAR OLD PAVEL KANTOREK OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA WON THE ANNUAL ASAHI INTERNATIONAL MARATHON RACE AT FUKUOKA, JAPAN, DEC. 3. HE COVERED THE 42.195 KILOMETRE (26-MILES 385 YARDS) COURSE IN TWO HOURS TWENTY-TWO MINUTES AND FIVE SECONDS BEHIND. HE WAS FOLLOWED CLOSELY BY NOBUYOSHI SADANAGA OF JAPAN.

A FIELD OF FIFTY RUNNERS, INCLUDING FOUR FOREIGN ATHLETES - KANTOREK; OKSANEN; WILKINSON (BRITAIN); AND JEFFREY JULIAN OF NEW ZEALAND - INVITED BY THE NEWSPAPER ASAHI SHIMBUN, SPONSOR OF THE RACE, SET OFF FROM HEIWADAI STADIUM SOON AFTER KID-DAY. FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THE RACE, SADANAGA, OKSANEN, JULIAN AND WILKINSON LED THE FIELD. KANTOREK WAS CONTENT TO LOPE ALONG SOME 100-METRES BEHIND. HE THEN SPEEDED UP TO CATCH THE LEADERS AT THE 20-KILOMETRE MARK, THEN SPORTED SOON AFTER 40-KILOMETRES TO TAKE THE LEAD WITH ABOUT 800-METRES TO GO.

ASKED AFTER HIS WIN WHETHER HE WOULD PARTICIPATE IN THE TOKYO OLYMPIC GAMES IN 1964, THE TALL KANTOREK SAID: "I WISH I COULD. BUT I MAY BE TOO OLD BY THEN". KANTOREK, CZECHOSLOVAKIA'S TOP MARATHON RUNNER, TOOK FOURTH PLACE IN THE ASAHI RACE IN 1957 AND 1958, PLACED SECOND IN 1959, AND THIRD LAST YEAR.
