INTRODUCTION Forty-four people died when an Italian Air force C-130 Hercules transport plane crashed into a hillside near Pisa on Thursday (3 March). The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

SYNOPSIS: Charred and mutilated bodies were scattered among debris over an 800 metre (yard) area down the side of the thousand-metre (3,000 feet) high Monte Sierra. Recovery team toiled through the night searching for remains. The plane crashed shortly after take-off from Pisa military airport. Some eye witnesses say they saw the plane losing altitude as it approached the mountain, and others reported that they heard what sounded like engines backfiring. The huge four-engined turbo-prop aircraft almost totally disintegrated on impact.

Thirty-eight young naval cadets on their first training flight and their commanders were among the victims. Five Air Force officers also died. It was the Italian Air Force's worst peace-time disaster. The 'plane was one of 14 bought from the American Lockheed company in 1969.
