  • Description

PRESIDENT NASSER OF THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC STRONGLY ATTACKED KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN, KING FEISAL OF SAUDI ARABIA AND PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA OF TUNISIA IN A SPEECH IN PORT SAID ON FRIDAY. HE WAS SPEAKING ON THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF "VICTORY DAY" -- THE DAY ON WHICH THE LAST BRITISH AND FRENCH FORCES WITHDREW FROM PORT SAID IN 1956.

THE PRESIDENT ARRIVED IN PORT SAID BY TRAIN FROM CAIRO IN THE AFTERNOON, AND FIRST WENT TO A CEREMONY AT THE MEMORIAL TO THE EGYPTIANS KILLED IN THE FIGHTING WITH THE BRITISH AND FRENCH FORCES, WHICH MOVED IN AFTER PRESIDENT NASSER NATIONALISED THE SUEZ CANAL. HIS POLITICAL SPEECH BEFORE A BIG CROWD ON FRIDAY NIGHT WAS BROADCAST BY CAIRO RADIO.

EXPLAINING WHY THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC DID NOT AGREE TO THE CONTINUATION OF ARAB SUMMIT CONFERENCE, PRESIDENT NASSER ASKED HOW HE COULD TRUST PEOPLE LIKE KING HUSSEIN, KING FEISAL AND PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA WHO, HE SAID, "BETRAYED US." HE CHARGED KING HUSSEIN AND KING FEISAL WITH BEING PREPARED TO "SELL PALESTINE", AND ACCUSED KING HUSSEIN OF EXPLOITING ARAB SUMMIT CONFERENCES TO GET MONEY FROM OTHER ARAB COUNTRIES.

PRESIDENT NASSER CLAIMED THAT RECENT DISTURBANCES IN JORDAN SHOWED THE PUBLIC CRITICISM OF THE GOVERNMENT, AND THAT TUNISIAN STUDENTS HAD EXPRESSED A SIMILAR OPINION OF PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA'S RULE, WHILE THERE WERE ALSO REPORTS OF A YOUTH MOVEMENT AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT IN SAUDI ARABIA. PRESIDENT NASSER ADDED THAT "REACTIONARY REGIMES" WERE DOOMED DESPITE THEIR "ALLIANCE WITH IMPERIALISM."
