    GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FROM AFRICA, ASIA AND LATIN AMERICA COUNTRIES MET LEADING WORLD BANKERS AND INDUSTRIALISTS IN AMSTERDAM TODAY (MONDAY) TO DISCUSS THE ROLE OF PRIVATE INVESTMENT IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. THE MEETING, WHICH WILL LAST FOR FIVE DAYS, IS BEING HELD UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE UNITED NATIONS.

    MOST OF THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE FOURTEEN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES ARE GOVERNMENT MINISTERS. FROM AFRICA, GHANA HAS SENT MR E.M. OMABOE, THE COMMISSIONER FOR ECONOMIC AFFAIRS, KENYA IS REPRESENTED BY MR TOM MBOYA, THE MINISTER FOR ECONOMIC AND DEVELOPMENT PLANNING, CHAD BY M. RAMADANE BARNA, DIRECTOR OF THE FIRST DEPARTMENT AT THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, AND THE IVORY COAST BY MR DOUMBIA.

    THERE ARE BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVES PRESENT FROM TEN COUNTRIES, INCLUDING THE UNITED KINGDOM AND THE UNITED STATES.

    THE MEETING HAS BEEN CALLED IN RESPONSE TO UNITED NATIONS RECOMMENDATION THAT DEVELOPING COUNTRIES SHOULD MAKE GREATER USE OF PRIVATE INVESTMENT. SPEAKERS TOLD THE GATHERING THAT METHODS HAD TO BE FOUND TO EXPAND PRIVATE INVESTMENT BECAUSE IT SEEMED PROBABLE THAT OFFICIAL AND PUBLIC AID OF THIS KIND WOULD BE ONE OF HE WANE NEXT YEAR. IN MANY DEVELOPING COUNTRIES THE PHASE OF SUPPLYING THE DOMESTIC MARKET WAS OVER AND THE NEEDS OF ACCESS TO FOREIGN MARKETS WAS BECOMING ACUTE. MEANWHILE, THEY EXPLAINED, ACCELERATED INDUSTRIALISATION COULD ONLY BE ACHIEVED WITH THE AID OF FOREIGN FIRMS.
