Background: Britian's Minister for Overseas Development, Mrs. Judith Hart, has called for a dialogue within the Commonwealth on means of improving food production.
Mrs. Hart was addressing the opening session of a conference of Ministers and officials from Commonwealth countries on food production and rural development.
The conference is a follow-up to the World Food Conference in Rome last November.
Mrs. Hart told the conference that a keynote of its deliberations should be the help fellow Commonwealth countries to identify relevant problems and seek relevant answers.
The conference is being held at the Commonhealth Secretariat Headquarters in London and is being attended by Ministers and officials from more than thirty countries.
It is expected to run until next Wednesday (12 March).
Those gathered at the conference represent about one-thousand million people, many of whom are facing serious food shortages.
