    EXPECTED PROTESTS AGAINST GERMAN PANZER TROOPS, NEWLY-ARRIVED FOR TRAINING IN BRITAIN, FAILED TO MATERIAL AUGUST 26 WHEN THE MEN HAD THEIR FIRST OUTING IN THE WELSH TOWN OF PEMBROKE, NEAR THEIR TRAINING BASE AT CASTLEMARTIN. INSTEAD, TOWNSFOLK GAVE THEM A CHEERFUL WELCOME.

    PROTEST LEAFLETS WERE HANDED OUT, BUT NO TROUBLESOME DEMONSTRATIONS TOOK PLACE. THE TROOPS, AN ADVANCE UNIT OF THE WEST GERMAN 84TH PANZER BATTALION, BOUGHT SOUVENIRS AND POSTCARDS AS THEY AMBLED ROUND THE TOWN ON A SIGHT-SEEING TOUR. THEIR RECEPTION WAS IN MARKED CONTRAST TO THE BOOS OF A HANDFUL ANTI-GERMAN DEMONSTRATORS WHO STOOD OUTSIDE THE CASTLEMARTIN CAMP WHEN THE TROOPS ARRIVED AUGUST 25. THE DEMONSTRATORS, CARRYING BANNERS READING: "NO WAR BASES FOR GERMAN GENERALS," SOON BROKE UP AFTER A BRIEF PROTEST.

    REMAINDER OF THE PANZER BATTALION - ABOUT 350 OFFICERS AND MEN, PLUS TANKS AND TRUCKS - ARE DUE SEPTEMBER 9 TO START MANOEUVRES FOR THREE WEEKS AT THE 5,000-ACRE CASTLEMARTIN FIRING RANGE.
