  • Description

RHODESIA'S LEADING NEWSPAPER, THE RHODESIA HERALD, IS DEFYING THE ILLEGAL REGIME'S LATEST STRINGENT CENSORSHIP LAWS.

MR IAN SMITH'S ADMINISTRATION IMPOSED CENSORSHIP WHEN INDEPENDENCE WAS SEIZED LAST NOVEMBER. BUT THE REGULATIONS HAVE NOW BEEN TIGHTENED TO PREVENT NEWSPAPERS FROM BUILDING NOTICES SAYING THAT THEY HAVE BEEN CENSORED. THE CENSORS HAVE ALSO BEEN GIVEN POWERS TO ORDERS EDITORS TO CHANGE THE LAYOUT OF THEIR NEWSPAPERS AND PREVENT THEM FROM LEAVING BLANK SPACES WHERE MATERIAL HAS BEEN CENSORED.

THE JOURNALISTS WHO PRODUCE THE RHODESIA HERALD DECIDED TO DEFY THE NEW REGULATIONS, AND THE NEWSPAPER HAS BEEN ON SALE WITH BLANK SPACES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS SAYING THAT THE CENSORS HAVE BEEN AT WORK. THE PENALTY FOR THEIR DEFIANCE IS A FINE OF 500 POUNDS AND TWO YEARS IN JAIL. NO ACTION HAS YET BEEN TAKEN AGAINST THEM, ALTHOUGH THE ILLEGAL REGIME COULD USE THEIR ACTION AS A JUSTIFICATION FOR BANNING THEIR NEWSPAPER.
