    THE DEADLOCK ON THE CYPRUS ISSUE CENTRES ON CYPRIOT INSISTENCE THAT PRIORITY BE GIVEN TO A SECURITY COUNCIL GUARANTEE OF THE ISLAND'S TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY, ALTHOUGH THIS MIGHT IMPLY A REPUDIATION OF BRITAIN, GREECE AND TURKEY AS EXISTING GUARANTORS OF THE ISLAND REPUBLIC'S SOVEREIGNTY.

    ON THE ISLAND, MEANWHILE, THE SITUATION REMAINS CALM AND BRITISH TROOPS OF THE PEACE-KEEPING FORCE ARE MAINTAINING CONSTANT PATROLS IN CITIES AND TOWNS WHERE TEMPERS HAVE BEEN RUNNING AT THEIR HEIGHT.

    HOUSES IN THE AREA HAVE BEEN EVACUATED AND ON BOTH SIDES, MIXED BRITISH AND GREEK AND BRITISH AND TURKISH PATROLS GUARD ITS LENGTH. ROAD BLOCKS AND BARBED WIRE CUT ACROSS INTERSECTIONS AND TRAFFIC MOVING THROUGH THE "DEMILITARIZED" ZONE IS CHECKED.
