  • Description

Several thousand South Vietnamese workers held a May Day rally outside their trade union offices in Saigon on Monday, while others held a Labour Day parade outside Saigon's zoo. At one point during the day, groups of students protesting over the Vietnam conflict attempted to organise a march through the city, but were prevented from doing so by riot police.

Police dispersed about fifty students and confiscated student banners calling for less expenditure on armaments and provision, instead, of rice for the people.

Government authorities had earlier requested Labour unions not to hold marches or demonstrations, due to security requirements.

In a Labour Day message, South Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Cao Ky told the workers that South Vietnam had to "carry out our social revolution in parallel with our struggle against Communist aggression."
