Background: Flash floods have hit India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 30 people and destroying hundreds of houses.

The floods came in the wake of a non-stop downpour of 16 hours leading to the immediate collapse of houses.

The army was called out to assist local authorities in organising relief for the flood victims. The relief workers face a gigantic task of clearing debris from collapsed houses under which many people are feared trapped.

According to "The Times of India" News Service, the entire state is in the grip of moderate to heavy floods following a steady rise in the levels of all major rivers.

And in Patna, in Bihar State, fresh floods have added to the disastrous flooding of the past few weeks. Just as the city was returning to normal, a fresh deluge has threatened the state as all major rivers have started rising again.

The floods have left behind widespread destruction and caused an outbreak of cholera. In addition anti-snake venom has had to be flown into Patna where about 30,000 people are marooned by the new floods. The Government sent in the venom after reports of poisonous bites from snakes swept into Patna by monsoon rains.
