  • Description

Soon after the return of Premier Lumumba, from his 17-day tour of North America and African states, Aug 8, over 1,000 Bakongo tribesmen marched through the streets of Leopoldville, Congo Republic, shouting "Down with Lumumba" and "Long Live Katanga". The tribesmen gathered outside a hotel in the city, demanding a federation of autonomous states to replace the present unified Congo Republic.

Most of the demonstrators were members of the Abako Party, which is under the leadership of President Kasavubu. At the mass meeting the demonstrators demanded an autonomous state of Bakongo, watched by the Ghanaian and Swedish troops of the United Nations. he tribesmen carried placards demanding the withdrawal of Ghanaian, Guinean and Belgian troops.

Prime Minister Lumumba has said the President Kasavubu supports a unified state. As yet the President has not commented on the situation. Federal movements now exist in five of the Congo's six provinces. In the Eastern Congo, stronghold of the Premier, there seems to be no demand for a federation.

At a meeting in Leopoldville, Aug 10, Premier Lumumba was injured by a stone thrown by a demonstrator. He was trying to calm a mob who were protesting against his statement which criticised the people who opposed a united Congo Republic.
