"THIS WILL BRING GREAT BRITAIN IN LINE WITH MOST OTHER COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD. NOW LETS HAVE A LOOK HOW THE SCALES COMPARE. THE CENTIGRADE AND FAHRENHEIT SCALE. NOW YOU MAY BE WONDERING HOW WE GO FROM FAHRENHEIT TO CENTIGRADE. YOU TAKE 32 DEGREES OFF THE FAHRENHEIT FIGURE AND THEN TAKE FIVE-NINTH OF THAT VALUE. FOR INSTANCE IF WE TAKE 50 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT, YOU TAKE 32 OFF THAT, AND THAT GIVES YOU EIGHTEEN AND THEN FIVE-NINTHS OF THAT VALUE GIVES YOU TEN DEGREES CENTIGRADE."

Background: THE METEOROLOGICAL OFFICE IN LONDON, U.K., INTRODUCED THE CENTIGRADE SCALE OF TEMPERATURES INTO WEATHER REPORTS AND FORECASTS ON JANUARY 15. BOTH SCALES, THE FAHRENHEIT AND THE CENTIGRADE, ARE TO BE USED FOR A TIME, THEN AS THE PUBLIC BECOMES ACCUSTOMED TO THE NEW SCALE, IT WILL BE GIVEN MORE PROMINENCE. GRADUALLY THE FAHRENHEIT READING WILL BE DROPPED.

IN WRITTEN FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS FOR RADIO AND TELEVISION, TEMPERATURES ARE NOW GIVEN IN FAHRENHEIT, FOLLOWED BY THE EQUIVALENT FIGURE IN CENTIGRADE. THE BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION'S "WEATHERMAN" WILL USE BOTH SCALES, AND ON OCCASIONS, DISCUSS THE DIFFERENCES. THE SCALES ARE ALSO BOTH QUOTED ON THE POST OFFICE AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE WEATHER SERVICE. THE METEOROLOGICAL OFFICE HAS ALREADY BEEN USING THE CENTIGRADE SCALE FOR ALL INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS, AND FOR THEIR OWN INTERNAL WORK. IN COMMON WITH SCIENTISTS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, THEY CALL IT CELSIUS, THE NAME ADOPTED BY INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT 13 YEARS AGO.

WHEN THE CHANGEOVER WAS ANNOUNCED, THE AIR MINISTRY SAID IT WAS BEING MADE AFTER CONSULTATION WITH LEADING PUBLIC UTILITIES AND LARGE INDUSTRIAL, COMMERCIAL AND RESEARCH ORGANISATIONS IN BRITAIN. THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION IS ALSO IN FAVOUR OF THE CHANGE. FOR MANY YEARS CHILDREN TAKING SCIENCE SUBJECTS HAVE BEEN TAUGHT THE CENTIGRADE SCALE, AND ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE METHOD OF CONVERTING FROM ONE TO THE OTHER.

NORMAL BLOOD TEMPERATURE, 98.4 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT IS 36.9 CENTIGRADE. THE 86 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT OF A HOT BRITISH SUMMER DAY IS 30 DEGREES CENTIGRADE. A MILD WINTER DAY, 50 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT IS 10 DEGREES CENTIGRADE. THE BRITISH PUBLIC WAS INTRODUCED TO THE NEW METHOD ON TELEVISION DURING THE NORMAL WEATHER FORECAST:
