    GOREE IS BEING DEVELOPED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF SENEGAL AS A MAJOR TOURIST RESORT. IT IS POPULAR WITH SPORTSMEN FROM EUROPE, KEEN TO FISH IN THE WELL-STOCKED WATERS SURROUNDING THE ISLAND.

    THE MAIN VENUE FOR THE NEW YEAR FESTIVITIES WAS THE ISLAND'S NEW FISHING CLUB, OPENED A YEAR AGO. THE CELEBRATIONS CONTINUED WELL IN TO NEW YEAR'S DAY.

    MOVES TO EXPAND THE ISLAND'S POPULARITY BEGAN IN 1966 WHEN THE SENEGALESE GOVERNMENT INVITED TRAVEL AGENTS AND REPORTERS FROM OVERSEAS TO SPEND A HOLIDAY ON GOREE. THE EXPANSION OF THE ISLAND'S TOURIST POTENTIAL HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT IS CONJUNCTION WITH THE INTER-STATES AFRICAN ORGANISATION FOR TOURISM, OF WHICH SENEGAL IS AN ACTIVE MEMBER.
