  • Description

The Israeli Foreign Minister, Abba Eban, has returned home after three days of what he called "intensive discussions" in Rumania with President Nicolae Ceasusescu and other Rumania leaders.

Rumania is the only Soviet bloc country which maintains relations with both the Israelis and the Arabs, and Mr. Eban's visit there was arranged at short notice, at the urgent request of the Rumanian government.

Before leaving the Rumanian capital, Bucharest, on Wednesday (November 7th), Mr. Eban told reporters he had obtained a "clearer picture" of Egyptian and Syrian views, and he said Rumania was in a good position to relay Israel's views on the Middle East settlement to the Soviet Union and the Arab States. But Mr. Eban denied he had come to Rumania for a secret contest with a Soviet or Arab emissary, squashing the widespread speculation that this was the real reason for his visit.

On the second day of Mr. Eban's visit (November 6th), he was filmed with President Ceausescu by Romanian television at the Presidential Palace n Bucharest.
