  • Description

Singapore entered the container shipping era on Saturday (June 24) when the Japanese ship "M.S. Nihon" arrived at the new container port in the East Lagoon -- the first-ever container vessel to service Singapore.

Millions of Singapore dollars have been ??? on the new terminal and equipment which port authorities expect will handle 600 tons of cargo per hour -- as opposed to the 20 tons per hour handled at present by conventional methods.

SYNOPSIS: The Japanese ship M.S. Nihon arrived in Singapore on Saturday -- and the island entered the container age. The Nihon is the first container ship to use the new terminal which was recently completed at a cost of millions of Singapore dollars. Such was the importance of the event, that the Port's Pipe Band was out to add some pageantry to the commercial occasion.

Among the main features of the new terminal are facilities for the speedy clearance of goods. Several new transporters, designed to move the containers from the docks to the unpacking sheds in the minimum of time, are already in use -- and many more are expected to be in operation before the end of the year. (PAUSE) Port authorities claim that the new equipment will enable work gangs to shift more than six hundred tone of cargo per hour....as opposed to the twenty tons per hour which are handled by conventional, pre-container, methods. Plans to extend the facilities have already been drawn up, and it is hoped that the port will soon be able to handle three container ships at once.

Port authorities have also said they will keep abreast of the latest container techniques in the United States and Europe, and there are plans for training schemes at home and abroad for terminal operators. The efficiency of the new facilities was well tested and proved by the Nihon. Such was the speed of the container unloading, that general cargo was able to be cleared by the after noon. Reloading began immediately, and the ship was able to sail for Tokyo twenty-four hours after arrival.
