Background: The reigning Australian surfing champion, John Christensen, added the first World Surfing Championship title to his laurels on February 25 with an impressive display of surfing on the Capetown breakers. Even though the government of Australian Premier Bob Hawke officially disapproves of all sporting links with South Africa, a strong Australian contingent arrived to compete individually for the 25,000 rand (20,000 US dollars) prize money offered by the contest organisers. Second place went to another Australian, Paul Wise, and former Aussie champions Roger Shackleton and Mike Petrie were also numbered among the 180 competitors who entered the surfing events at Capetown's Noordhoek Beach.
