Background: Swedish polevaulter Kjeil Isaksson broke his own world record in Los Angeles on Saturday (April 15) when he cleared 18 feet 2 inches (5.54 metres) on his third attempt.

Isaksson, who set the previous record of 18 feet I Inch (5.15 metres) only a week ago, was vaulting at the Meet of Champions at the University of California, Los Angeles campus.

But the Swede - who is 5ft 8 1/2 inches (174cm - failed in his three attempts to clear 18ft 4 inches (5.15 metres) even though he had room to spare on his record-breaking vault.
