MIKE HAILWOOD OF BRITAIN WON THE 250 CC RACE AT THE INTERNATIONAL TOURIST TROPHY (TT) MEETING ON THE ISLE OF MAN TODAY (SUNDAY), GIVING HIM AN UNBEATABLE LEAD FOR THIS YEAR'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. IN THE SIDECAR EVENT, THE REIGNING SIDECAR WORLD CHAMPION, FRITZ SCHEIDEGGER OF SWITZERLAND, CROSSED THE LINE FOUR-FIFTH OF A SECOND AHEAD OF WEST GERMANY'S MAX DUEBEL - BUT LOST THE RACE TO DEUBEL ON DISQUALIFICATION.

HAILWOOD, RIDING A JAPANESE HONDA MACHINE, COVERED THE 226.4 MILE (364.35 KM) COURSE IN TWO HOURS 13 MINUTES 26 SECONDS AT THE RECORD AVERAGE SPEED OF 101.79 MILES (163.81 KLMS) AN HOUR. HE LED FROM THE START AND SET A NEW LAP RECORD ON THE FIRST CIRCUIT WITH A SPEED OF 104.29 MILES (167.84 KLMS) AN HOUR. HAILWOOD IS NOW ASSURED OF BOTH THE 250 AND 350 CC WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.

HOWEVER, SCHEIDEGGER, WHO LIKE DEUBEL WAS RIDING A B.M.W. MACHINE, TOOK OVER THE LAST LAP AND KEPT AHEAD TO WIN BY THE NARROWEST MARGIN IN T.T. HISTORY. HE WAS LATER DISQUALIFIED FOR CONTRAVENING THE FUEL REGULATIONS. DEUBEL'S TIME WAS ONE HOUR 14 MINUTES 50.8 SECONDS WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 90.75 MILES (146.05 KLMS) AN HOUR.

THE ISLES OF MAN T.T. MEETING, 8TH IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CALENDAR, WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR JUNE BUT WAS POSTPONED BECAUSE OF THE BRITISH SEAMEN'S STRIKE.
