  • Description

In a ceremony on a windswept hillside on the outskirts of Jerusalem, Israel, April 13, ashes of Jewish victims recovered from the furnaces of Nazi extermination camps were transferred from temporary resting place to a tomb in a permanent memorial building opened that day.

Rabbi Mordecai Nurock, a member of the Israeli Government, whose wife and children were killed by the Nazis, kindled a memorial lamp which is to be relit every day by a different representative of one of the 30,000 Jewish communities in Europe that were destroyed.

Speaking in the presence of three West German Government representatives - official observers at the trial of Adolf Eichmann - the Rabbi denounced Eichmann for his part in the extermination of almost six million Jews, and added that the Germans were "a nation of murderers". He then attacked the Allies for failing to come to the rescue of the victims.

The ceremony was part of Holocaust Day celebrations - an annual remembrance day fixed by Parliament to commemorate the martyrs of the European disaster.
