  • Description

YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) THE BORDER CROSSING AT FURTH IM WALD BETWEEN WEST GERMANY AND CZECHOSLOVAKIA WAS RE-OPENED. IT HAD BEEN CLOSED FOR 15 YEARS. IT IS THE FIRST BORDER OPEN BETWEEN A NATO COUNTRY AND A MEMBER OF THE EAST EUROPEAN BLOC.

SINCE DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES DO NOT EXIST ALL NEGOTIATIONS, OPENED ON CZECHOSLOVAKIA INITIATIVE, WERE CONDUCTED AT LOCAL OFFICIAL LEVEL.

THE BORDER POST IS ON A BRIDGE SPANNING THE RIVER WARM PASTRITIZ. BUILT SPECIALLY FOR THE NEW LINK, AT A COST OF 100,000 D.M., (GBP8,850), THE BRIDGE WILL BE PAID FOR JOINTLY BY THE TWO COUNTRIES.

SOME 1,200 CARS A DAY ARE EXPECTED TO USE THE BORDER CROSSING AND ON EACH SIDE THE ROAD HAS BEEN WIDENED CONSIDERABLY TO DEAL WITH THE TRAFFIC. THERE ARE ALSO ALL THE SUBSIDIARY BUILDINGS THAT GO WITH A BORDER CROSSING: A BANK, A RESTAURANT, AND A PETROL STATION.

WEST GERMANY EXPECTS A LIVELY FLOW OF GOODS TRAFFIC FROM THE EAST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, WHILE CZECHOSLOVAKIA MAY EXPECT TENS OF THOUSANDS OF TOURISTS IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
