  • Description

A congressional delegation, a White House aide, several other dignitaries and hundreds of well-wishers gathered in this small mountain community today to honour Virginia's "Grand Old Man" on his 112th birthday.

And Joh Salling, one of two surviving Civil War veterans seemed in his way to enjoy minute of it. Sporting a brand-new hearing aid and a new Confederate officer's uniform, the black-haired Salling sat in a wheel chair and attentively observed the "going-on" although, he said, "I can't hear to do any good."
To all enquiries about how he felt, the Old Dominion's lone surviving Confederate veteran replied: "I feel tolerably well."
Salling, who bears the honorary title of "general", received a letter of felicitation from another general -- President Eisenhower. The letter was presented by a White House aide, Major William Farquhar, who came down with the Washington delegation. Representative W. Pat Jennings, in whose district Salling's Scott Country home is located, was the principal speaker at today's ceremony. He told Salling that the House and Senate had authorized payment of a pension to the two surviving Confederate veterans.

"General" Salling was interviewed by our reporter after the birthday celebrations.........SOF..........
