    THE EIGHT-DAY JEWISH RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL OF SUCCOT OPENED LAST NIGHT (SUNDAY) IN JERUSALEM WHEN HUNDREDS OF PILGRIMS MADE A PILGRIMAGE TO THE WAILING WALL.

    THE PILGRIMS TRAVELLED FROM ALL OVER ISRAEL. THEY MARCHED IN PROCESSION FROM JERUSALEM, LED BY THE HOLY SCROLLS, AND LEADERS OF THE JEWISH FAITH IN ISRAEL.

    SUCCOT IS ONE OF THREE ANNUAL PILGRIMAGES IN THE JEWISH FAITH, THE OTHERS PENTECOST AND THE PASSOVER. IT IS A TIME OF RELIGIOUS REJOICING, AND HAS ITS ORIGINS IN THE EARLY DAYS OF JUDAISM, MORE THAN FIVE THOUSANDS YEARS AGO.

    THE PROCESSION WAS LED BY THE CHIEF RABBI OF JERUSALEM, RABBI PARDESS, RABBI GAMLIEL, THE RABBI ADMINISTERING JERUSALEM'S HOLY PLACES, AND DOCTOR CAHANE, THE ISRAELI MINISTER FOR RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS.

    THE PILGRIMS STOPPED AT MOUNT ZION, WHERE PRAYERS FOR WORLD PEACE WERE SAID.

    SUCCOT IF KNOWN AS A 'FOOT' FESTIVAL, OR ONE OF PILGRIMAGE. DURING THE EIGHT DAYS OF THE FESTIVAL DEVOUT JEWS ERECT SMALL TEMPORARY DWELLINGS, KNOWN AS SUCCA, WHERE THEY PRAY AND CELEBRATE THE OCCASION. THE SUCCA ARE SYMBOLIC OF THE TABERNACLES WHICH SUCCOT COMMEMORATES.
