  • Description

Troops and citizens of the Yemen Arab Republic celebrated the thirteenth anniversary of the 1962 revolution which led to the overthrow of the country's monarchy last Friday (26 September).

The anniversary ceremonies were led by Yemeni head of state, Colonel Ibrahim al-Hamdi, and attended by Sudanese President Jaafar El Nimeiry. Generals from a number of Arab states also took part in the proceedings, which included a review of Yemen's military forces and armaments.

The September 1962 revolution resulted in a lengthy and bitter civil war between royalist forces -- with Saudi Arabian support -- assisted by troops from the then United Arab Republic (now Egypt) fighting continued until 1970 when an official settlement was achieved by the two sides. But sporadic fighting between government troops and small groups of royalist forces still flying the flag of the deposed Imam continues in isolated valleys in the northeast of the country.

Colonel Hamdi came to power in June 1974 in a bloodless coup. His government supports a policy of friendship with all Arab stats, including the country's southern neighbour, the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (formerly Aden). Friction between the two states erupted into border clashes during 1972, but a ceasefire was reached with the help of the Arab League.

Yemen's relations with sudan have been strengthened as a result of President Nimeiry's visit. During his four days in Yemen, the Sudanese leader held a series of discussions with Colonel Hamdi resulting in a five-year automatically renewable bilateral agreement on economic, cultural and technical co-operation.

The two leaders also issued a joint statement warning that there would be no peace in the Middle East unless Israel withdrew from all Arab-occupied territories and the Palestinians recovered their rights.
