  • Description

A SWEEPING VICTORY FOR GENERAL DE GAULLE - AND WHAT LOOKS LIKE BEING THE START OF THE TWO-PARTY SYSTEM - THAT'S HOW THE FRENCH GENERAL ELECTIONS ENDED YESTERDAY. TODAY THE GENERAL LEADS A GOVERNMENT WITH AN ABSOLUTE MAJORITY IN THE 482-SEAT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY PUT THERE, ACCORDING TO UNOFFICIAL FIGURES, BY MORE THAN 7 MILLION ELECTORS - A MILLION AND A HALF MORE THAN THOSE WHO VOTED FOR THE GAULLIST CANDIDATES IN THE FIRST POLL A WEEK AGO.

THE VICTORIOUS GAULLISTS AND OTHER CANDIDATES PLEDGED TO SUPPORT DE GAULLE NOW HOLD 270 SEATS COMPARED WITH THE 165 SEATS HELD BY THE GAULLISTS IN THE OLD ASSEMBLY. FRANCE'S OVERWHELMING VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN THE POLICIES OF THEIR PRESIDENT ALMOST WIPED OUT THE TRADITIONAL CONSERVATIVE PARTY (C.N.I.) AND SLASHED THE CATHOLICS' (M.R.P.) STRENGTH BY A THIRD. HOWEVER, ONE PROMINENT GAULLIST WAS DEFEATED AT THE POLLS - FORMER PRIME MINISTER, MICHEL DEBRE - BEATEN BY AN ELECTORAL ALLIANCE IN WHICH SOCIALIST AND COMMUNIST CANDIDATES STOOD DOWN IN FAVOUR OF A RADICAL.

ALTHOUGH DE GAULLE IS NOW SET FOR FIVE YEARS WITHOUT REAL PARLIAMENTARY OBSTRUCTION, THE MAIN OPPOSITION WILL COME FROM THE LEFT-WING ALLIANCE. THERE ARE NOW 41 COMMUNISTS COMPARED WITH 10 IN THE OLD ASSEMBLY AND 66 SOCIALISTS COMPARED WITH 44.

PRESIDENT DE GAULLE, WHO DESCRIBED THE RESULTS AS "FINE" IS EXPECTED TODAY TO REAPPOINT M. GEORGE POMPIDOU AS PRIME MINISTER AND M. MAURICE COUVE DE MURVILLE AS FOREIGN MINISTER. WHEN THE NEW ASSEMBLY MEETS ON DECEMBER 6TH ITS MAIN DOMESTICS TASK WILL BE TO BUILD UP A FRENCH NUCLEAR FORCE, INCREASE SOCIAL PROSPERITY AND OVERHAUL THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM. EXTERNALLY, IT IS EXPECTED TO PRESS FOR A EUROPEAN POLITICAL UNION, AND FOR BRITAIN AND AMERICA TO SHARE THEIR ATOMIC SECRETS WITH FRANCE
