  • Description

BRITAIN'S OFFICIAL ENVOY, SIR HAROLD BEELEY, IN CAIRO TO TRY AND IMPROVE DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) HELD TALKS WITH PRESIDENT NASSER'S ADVISER ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS, DR MAHMOUD FAWZI.

SIR HAROLD ALSO HAD TALKS WITH THE EGYPTIAN FOREIGN UNDER-SECRETARY, MR AHMED HASSAN EL FIKKY. THE BRITISH ENVOY EXPLAINED LONDON'S VIEWS ON THE RESUMPTION OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN BRITAIN AND THE U.A.R.

MR EL FIKKY TOLD SIR HAROLD THAT THE U.A.R. SHARED THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S DESIRE TO CREATE FRUITFUL RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

SIR HAROLD, A FORMER BRITISH AMBASSADOR TO CAIRO, SAW HIS OLD FRIEND DR FAWZI AFTER HIS TALKS WITH MR EL FIKKY, WHO JOINED THE TWO MEN.

DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN BRITAIN AND THE U.A.R. WERE BROKEN OFF IN DECEMBER 1965 OVER RHODESIA.
