  • Description

Three brain specialists are conferring in Ghana's Korle Bu hospital, and there in one of the beds is 8-year-old Israeli Rami Kat critically injured in a road crash, November 14. Also at the hospital is Rami Kaat'z father, waiting anxiously.

The accident - in which one Israeli was killed - occurred at the week-end, when the cable company was closed and Ghana was without its usual contact with the outside world.

An amateur radio enthusiast at Accra Airport succeeded in contacting a colleague in Tel Aviv, Israel, after calling for 20 minutes, and soon a local brain specialist was on his way to Ghana, but was not expected to arrive for 36 hours.

A further call by the radio enthusiast was received in America and just over 24 hours later a brain specialist and surgeon from the U.S. 7th Fleet based in Morocco arrived by Navy 'plane at Accra, Ghana's Premier Nkrumah giving special permission for the military aircraft to land.

Dr. Nkrumah heard news of the crash November 15; had the cable office opened up and sent out an urgent request for a surgical specialist to come from Britain. The British surgeon arrived next morning. At the same time another brain specialist flew in from Paris.

Within 36 hours five of the world's leading specialists had rushed to Ghana to treat Rami Kaatz, and by November 18 the young Israeli was improving, and if all goes well will be moved to hospital in Israel in another ten days' time.
