  • Description

HOPES OF SAVING THE LIEF OF THE PORTUGUESE PREMIER, 79-YEAR-OLD DR. ANTONIO DE OLIVEIRA SALAZAR, DWINDLED TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) DESPITE A CONSULTATION WITH AN AMERICAN NEURO SURGEON WHO FLEW ACROSS THE ATLANTIC AND RUSHED TO HIS BEDSIDE TODAY.

THE AMERICAN NEURO-SURGEON, DR. HOUSTON MERRITT, WAS CALLED IN BY THE PORTUGUESE GOVERNMENT. HE SPENT 95 MINUTES AT DR. SALAZAR'S BEDSIDE IN THE RED CROSS CLINIC IN LISBON AND IN CONFERENCE WITH PORTUGUESE PHYSICIANS.

A MEDICAL BULLETIN ISSUED AFTERWARDS MADE NO REFERENCE TO THE CONDITION OF THE PREMIER, WHO IS STILL IN A COMA FOLLOWING A SEVERE STROKE TWO DAYS AGO (MONDAY). DR. SALAZAR SUFFERED THE STROKE TEN DAYS AFTER UNDERGOING AN OPERATION FOR THE REMOVAL OF A BLOOD CLOT FROM THE BRAIN. PREVIOUSLY, DOCTORS HAVE BEEN QUICK TO ANNOUNCE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST IMPROVEMENT IN DR. SALAZAR'S CONDITION.

FOLLOWING HIS CONSULTATION TODAY, DR. MERRITT -- ONE OF THE DOCTORS WHO ATTENDS FORMER U.S. PRESIDENT DWIGHT Q. EISENHOWER -- IMMEDIATELY REPORTED HIS FINDINGS TO THE PORTUGUESE PRESIDENT, ADMIRAL AMERICO RODRIGUES TOMAS.

USUALLY RELIABLE SOURCES SAID PORTUGUESE LEADERS HAD CHOSEN A SUCCESSOR TO DR. SALAZAR IN THE EVENT OF HIS DEATH OR PERMANENT INCAPACITY. THEY SAID THE NEW PREMIER WOULD BE DR. MARCELO CAETANO, 62, A FORMER MINISTER AND PROFESSOR OF ADMINISTRATIVE LAW.
