Background: The council of the Arab League has been meeting in Cairo to discuss the continuing crisis in Jordan. The Council went into emergency session yesterday (Thursday, September 17.)
Initially the League decided to stay in emergency session as long as the crisis lasted in Jordan.
After meeting for four hours the council expressed grave concern at the Jordan situation and urged a rapid return to normal.
Earlier, the secretary general of the League, Abdel Khalek Hassouna, had made an urgent appeal to Arab heads of State to intervene to end the fighting between the Jordanian Army and the Palestinian commandos.
A league spokesman said that Mr. Hassouna had sent cables to Arab Kings and Presidents to intercede with King Hussein and Yasser Arafat, chairman of the central committee of the Palestine resistance movement, to end the bloodshed.
Mr. Hassouna held several meetings with Arab envoys in Cairo and also conferred with the Jamal Al-Sourani, the Cairo representative of the Palestine Liberation Organisation.
Today it was reported that the League Council was remaining on the alert to convene again at short notice for further discussions on the crisis.
