Background: The fact that the female of the funnel web spider eats the lethal male of the species without ill effects is leading scientists in Sydney on a new path in their search for a neutraliser to the fatal funnel-web venom. At the Royal North Shore Hospital Institute of Medical Research funnel webs -- already in the laboratory -- will be bred for research later this year.

Workers handle the deadly female with car. Research will be based in Sydney where most of the human deaths from funnel-web bites have occurred.

On the male spider there is a spur on each second leg to protect him from the female when they are breeding. The fate of the male suggests the female may produce a neutraliser to his venom.
