    ABOUT 700 SINGAPORE NANYANG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS STAGED A PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION ON MONDAY, IN FRONT OF THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE IN THE CITY HALL BUILDING, PROTESTING AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S PLANS TO REORGANISE THE UNIVERSITY.

    THE STUDENTS, WHO ARRIVED IN LORRIES AND BUSSES, MARCHED ONTO A HUGE PLAYING FIELD DIRECTLY OPPOSITE THE BUILDING AND SQUATTED DOWN.THEY PUT UP BANNERS AND PLACARDS AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE UNIVERSITY.

    THE STUDENTS, REFUSED TO DISPERSE AND CONTINUED TO SQUAT UNDER THE BLAZING SUN WHILE THEY WAITED FOR THEIR FIVE LEADERS TO EMERGE FORM THE BUILDING.THE CITY HALL BUILDING WAS RINGED BY RIOT SQUAD POLICE.

    THE REPRESENTATIVES, FOUR BOYS AND A GIRL, THEN CAME OUT OF THE BUILDING AFTER REPRESENTING THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, DOCTOR TOH CHIN CHYE, (PRIME MINISTER LEE KUAN YEW IS HOLIDAYING IN MALAYA) A PETITION EXPLAINING THE VIEWS OF THE STUDENTS ON THE RE-ORGANISATION OF THE UNIVERSITY AND THE RECENT ARREST OF 20 STUDENTS.

    DOCTOR TOH TOLD THE REPRESENTATIVES THAT THE ARREST OF STUDENTS WAS A QUESTION CONCERNING SECURITY WHICH IS UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE MALAYSIAN CENTRAL GOVERNMENT.

    ON THE QUESTION OF GIVING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO THE UNIVERSITY AND ACCORDING RECOGNITION TO THE UNIVERSITY'S DEGREES, THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER SAID GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNIVERSITY COUNCIL ARE NOW MEETING IN NEGOTIATIONS ON THESE MATTERS.
