  • Description

FORTY FOUR PEOPLE DIED ON THURSDAY (7 MAY) WHEN AN AIRLINER CRASHED AND EXPLODED IN A PASTURE FORTY MILES EAST OF SAN FRANCISCO. THE PLANE, ENROUTE FROM RENO, NEVADA, TO SAN FRANCISCO, EXPLODED SO VIOLENTLY THAT ONLY FOOTBALL SIZED PIECES OF WRECKAGE REMAINED.

EYEWITNESSES SAID THAT THE PLANE, A TWIN ENGINED FAIRCHILD TURBOPROP, CAME IN OVER THE PASTURE AT AN UNUSUALLY LOW ATTITUDE. IT FALTERED, EMITTED A PUFF OF SMOKE FROM ONE ENGINE AND THEN CRASHED AND EXPLODED. INVESTIGATORS CORDONED OFF THE CRASH SITE.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE FEDERAL AVIATION AGENCY SAID THE PLANE SENT A ROUTINE MESSAGE SHORTLY BEFORE THE CRASH. THEN THE PILOT OF ANOTHER AIRCRAFT SAID HE HEARD THE GARBLED MESSAGE AND SAW A PUFF OF SMOKE JUST AFTERWARDS.
