  • Description

In Lebanon, Palestinians and their leftist allies have begun withdrawing from civilian areas in the south. But as the withdrawal goes on Israeli Air Force planes have attacked Palestinian targets in Southern Lebanon.

SYNOPSIS: The Palestinians announced on Wednesday (6 June 1979) that they were withdrawing their guerrillas from populated areas of the south. They're trying to escape the pounding they've suffered by Israeli air strikes. The Combined Command of the Palestinians and their Allies say they took a military decision to keep clear of southern villages so the enemy may have no excuse to take action against these villages. Friday's (8 June) air strikes were the first to hit the area for two week, after a series of earlier devastating raids and artillery bombardments which left many killed or wounded.

In this raid at least four Israeli planes pounded southern Lebanon and first reports said ten people were wounded. Reuters news agency said two israeli Phantoms and two Skyhawks attacked a wide area around the market town of Nabatiyah and five nearby villages.

The air raids began shortly after dawn, just as Palestinians were withdrawing from civilian areas. Reuters report the air strike continued for at least two hours, drawing retaliatory fire from the ground. People in the Israeli town of Matullah said some shells were fired towards Israel from Lebanon at about the time of the raid.

An Israeli army statement said all its aircraft returned safely to base.
